Notes: From Cocoa, FL. Recruited as a cornerback, but moved to safety as a freshman. Appeared in all 13 games and started final 3 at safety, totaled 32 tackles, 0.5 TFL, 3 PBU and 3 INT (one returned for a touchdown) in 2016. Played and started all 11 games with 58 tackles, 6 TFL, 1 sack, 7 PBU and 2 INT in 2017, despite being slowed by various injuries at times. Added the Johnson to his name at the end of 2017 to honor his stepfather, Brian Johnson. His biological father, Chauncey Gardner Sr., has been a part of his life, but Johnson raised him since he was three-years-old. Expected to play safety and nickel role in 2018.
Positives: Versatile defensive back who can play anywhere in the secondary. Natural athlete. Very good ball skills, hands and instincts. Jumps routes and makes plays on the ball. Has very good return skills. Can be a physical tackler.
Negatives: Somewhat inconsistent in coverage and as a tackler.
