Ty Summers, ILB, Texas Christian #42
6015, 242, 4.79
Notes: From San Antonio, TX. Played quarterback and safety in high school. Played in the opener as a freshman before suffering a season-ending injury and received a medical redshirt in 2014. Played in 13 games, recording 86 tackles, 4 TFL, 1 sack, 1 INT (returned 12 yards) and 2 PBU in 2015. Summers was ejected for targeting after an illegal hit on Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield in 2015, resulting in a concussion for Mayfield. But Summers obtained his cell phone number, left Mayfield a message to apologize immediately after the game, and the two fellow Texas natives remain friends. Played in all 13 games with 10 starts, racking up 121 tackles, 5 TFL, 1.5 sacks and 3 PBU in 2016. Played in all 14 games and started 9, including one at defensive end, with 64 tackles, 8 TFL, 4 sacks, 1 INT, 6 PBU, 1 FF and 1 FR in 2017. Moved to defensive end in 2018.
Positives: Smart player. Versatile; can play inside linebacker or outside off the edge, and has played down some. Active, instinctive and productive. Makes plays in all phases. Can get upfield and provide some pass rush. Shows feel on pass defense. Should do very well on special teams.
Negatives: Lacks great natural size and is not an elite, quick-twitch athlete. Has limitations in pass coverage.
Summary: Solid late-round value pick who can provide depth at multiple spots and contribute on special teams as a rookie.
